Data file description

The updated NHANES III Linked Mortality Restricted-use File provides mortality follow-up data from the date of NHANES III survey participation (1988-1994) through December 31, 2006. Mortality ascertainment is based upon the results from a probabilistic match between NHANES III and NDI death certificate records. The NHANES III Linked Mortality Restricted-use data contains 33,994 records with information on NHANES III participant eligibility status, vital status, date of death, age at death, and underlying and contributing causes of death. Additional death certificate data are available by special request. The NHANES III Linked Mortality Restricted-use data file does not contain perturbed data.

Data availability

Due to confidentiality requirements, the NHANES III Linked Mortality Restricted-use data are only accessible through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC). Approved researchers will be able to analyze data from the NHANES III Restricted-use Linked Mortality File in the RDC. All interested researchers must submit a research proposal to the RDC and provide additional justification in the RDC proposal to access special request variables.
