NNHS Linked Mortality Files
Description of the NNHS Linked Mortality Files
NCHS has conducted mortality linkages of the 1985, 1995, 1997, and 2004 National Nursing Home Surveys (NNHS) to death certificate data found in the National Death Index (NDI). The NNHS Linked Mortality Files provide mortality follow-up data from the date of NNHS interview through December 31, 2006. Mortality ascertainment is based primarily upon the results from a probabilistic match between the NNHS and NDI death certificate records. Linkage of the NNHS survey participants with the NDI provides the opportunity to conduct a vast array of outcome studies designed to investigate the association of a wide variety of health factors with mortality.
There are two versions of the NNHS Linked Mortality Files: public-use files that include a limited set of mortality variables for NNHS participants and restricted-use files that includes more detailed mortality information.
