NHANES II Linked Mortality File
Description of the NHANES II Linked Mortality File
NCHS has updated the mortality linkage of the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II) to death certificate data found in the National Death Index (NDI). The updated NHANES II Linked Mortality File provides mortality follow-up data through December 31, 2006 for the 9,252 NHANES II participants who were 30-75 years of age and completed a medical examination during the survey period (1976-1980). Mortality ascertainment is based primarily upon the results from a probabilistic match between NHANES II and NDI death certificate records. Linkage of NHANES II survey participants with the NDI provides the opportunity to conduct studies designed to investigate the association of a variety of health factors with mortality. NCHS recommends that researchers use the new linked mortality file as it supersedes the prior data releases of the NHANES II Linked Mortality File.
There are two versions of the NHANES II Linked Mortality File: a public-use file that includes a limited set of mortality variables for NHANES II participants and a restricted-use file that includes more detailed mortality information.
