Linkage Methods/Analytical Support

Mortality ascertainment is based primarily upon the results from a probabilistic match between NCHS surveys and NDI death certificate records. The methods used to produce the 2011 NCHS Linked Mortality File (mortality follow-up through 2011) are similar to previous NCHS mortality linkages but not exactly the same.

Linkage Methods

Analytic Support

The analytic guidelines provided below include guidance on various topics related to the analysis of the NCHS linked mortality files:

  • Linkage eligibility status
  • Use of survey weights
  • Eligibility adjusted weights
  • Additional weighting information and scientific documentation for the NHIS
  • Pooled analysis of NCHS linked mortality files
  • Linkage survey participants with an age last known alive of 100 years or greater
  • Inconsistencies in baseline age and follow-up age
  • Source of mortality data
  • Match result variables
  • Oversampling
  • Statistical issues with survey data
