Toxic Chemical Exposure

Contaminated Pharmaceutical Products Investigation in Haiti

During 1995 and 1996 in Haiti, at least 85 children died as a result of acute kidney failure associated with consuming antifreeze-contaminated syrup that was used to reduce fever in children. CDC's Environmental Health Laboratory identified the toxic chemical; the Haitian Ministry of Health conducted public information campaigns to inform people about the danger of using the syrup products, and the manufacturer recalled all of the liquid medications it produced. Once the products were withdrawn from the market, no other deaths associated with this exposure were reported. More information is available from CDC's MMWR.
