Performance Standards for Environmental Public Health: Their Value in Assessing Capabilities of Environmental Health Programs (Performance Standards)

Description of Session

Well run environmental health programs will have the capability to perform the essential environmental public health services (EssEPHS). Assessing this capability is important to improved health and reduced risk. The Environmental Public Health Performance Standards (EPHPS) were developed to provide state, tribal, and local environmental health programs with an instrument that allows them to easily assess their capability to perform the EssEPHS. The EPHPS were developed to more clearly describe what environmental health programs need to do to perform the EssEPHS. The EPHPS complement the National Public Health Performance Standards and provide state, tribal, and local programs with a focused instrument. Environmental health programs can use the standards to measure their performance and identify program areas needing improvement. Use of the standards can result in a program's demonstrating improved capacity to perform the EssEPHS , with the result of potentially improved health and reduced risk from environmental factors. The session will include presentations on why and how the standards were developed, how they can be used to improve program performance, a review of the standards, their application, and their proposed future use.
