Application of ATSDR's Mixtures Guidance at Two Hazardous Waste Sites
Description of Session
ATSDR staff scientists will show the application of the agency's mixture guidance at two hazardous waste sites. After a short presentation reviewing ATSDR's mixture guidance by one of its developers, Dr. Moiz Mumtaz, Dr. David Mellard will present the mixtures risk assessment for the IBM Endicott site, where residents were exposed via municipal water to low levels of several common volatile organic compounds. Results showed that exposure levels were so low that the mixture was not likely to cause harmful effects. Dr. Mark Johnson will present the mixtures risk assessment for the Conrail Railyard site, where residents were exposed to high levels of trichloroethene and carbon tetrachloride. Application of ATSDR's mixture guidance showed that TCE most likely acted synergistically to increase harmful effects in residents who were exposed to carbon tetrachloride and TCE.
