Health Disparities: A Selected BibliographyFrom the National Center for Chronic
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion On this page— Prepared for the 19th National Conference on Chronic
Disease Prevention and Control Compiled by This publication is not copyrighted and may be freely reproduced. IntroductionEliminating health disparities is an overarching goal of the Healthy People 2010 national public health agenda, and it is a top priority for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As part of the CDC Futures Initiative, we aim to eliminate health disparities by helping people who are at the greatest risk for poor health. To accomplish these goals, we need effective interventions, such as those highlighted at the 19th National Conference on Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, March 1–3, 2005. The conference brings together leading experts on health disparities and is a collaboration between the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), the Prevention Research Centers, and the Association of State and Territorial Chronic Disease Program Directors. This bibliography, prepared specifically for conference attendees, contains publication citations written by CDC staff and partners during the past four years. Included are peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and monographs focusing on the United States. Whether you are just getting involved in efforts to eliminate health disparities or are a long-time supporter, we hope this bibliography provides the information you need to help close the gaps and reach populations bearing the greatest burden of poor health. AcknowledgmentsWe thank the Associate Directors for Science in each division of NCCDPHP, CDC, Dr. Laurie Elam-Evans, Valerie Johnson and Diana Toomer, Martha Boyd and Leslie Parker, CDC, and Karen Patrias at the National Library of Medicine, for their assistance in preparing this bibliography. About These CitationsThese citations are categorized by the major research and program areas within the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. Following many of the journal article citations, will be an availability statement to help you access these articles. This statement contains the identification number (PMID) for the citation in the National Library of Medicine PubMed retrieval system (http://www.pubmed.gov). The PubMed record includes an abstract for most articles and may also provide a link to the publisher's Internet site. Full text articles for all of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) citations are available at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr. Available OnlineThis bibliography, with hyperlinks and updates to many citations, and additional information about the CDC’s efforts to eliminate health disparities is available online at http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp.
