State Program in Brief
The Texas Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases aims to:
- Develop and foster strong statewide networks and collaborations, both internal and external.
- Promote breastfeeding as the nourishment of choice for Texas babies.
- Promote caloric balance and regular physical activity as the preferred methods for weight control.
- Promote obesity awareness as a public health issue.
- Mobilize families, schools, and communities to create opportunities for lifestyles that promote a healthful weight.
- Promote policy and environmental changes that support healthful eating habits and physical activity.
- Monitor obesity rates and obesity-related behaviors and health conditions for planning, evaluation, and dissemination activities.
- Target health-disparate populations in obesity prevention efforts.
Recently, the state:
- Produced the Strategic Plan for the Prevention of Obesity: 2005–2010.
- Launched the Eat Smart, Be Active, Texas campaign Web site.
- Released new child overweight statistics for Texas 4th, 8th, and 11th graders.
- Launched the Texas Activity and Nutrition (TexAN) Coalition.
- Launched the Texas Active Living Network.
- Launched the Obesity Program Monitoring and Tracking System (PMATS) to track strategic-plan implementation.
- Implemented the DSHS Nutrition and Physical Activity Best Practice Recognition Program.
- Held community skill-building workshops throughout Texas to help communities develop coalitions and collaborations around promoting nutrition and physical activity.
- Continued implementing obesity-prevention interventions in Corpus Christi and Fort Stockton, including a community walking program, restaurant intervention, and worksite wellness intervention.
