1999 – 2004 Data
The Directors of Speech and Hearing Programs in State Health and Welfare
Agencies (DSHPSHWA) formed a task force in 1995 to determine which data
items should be included in a future national database for early hearing
detection and intervention. In 1998, CDC began sponsoring monthly
teleconferences for the DSHPSHWA group and their consultants to discuss
the items and their definitions. A list of data items were agreed on in
October 1999 and are listed below.
2005 - 2006 DSHPSHWA
Membership Directory
Core DSHPSHWA Data Items
-
Number of live births
-
Number referred for audiologic
evaluation
-
Number who received audiologic
evaluation by 3 months of age
-
Number with Permanent Childhood Hearing
Loss (PCHL) aged 0-7 years, by birth year
-
Average/median age of diagnosis of

-
Number of infants enrolled in
intervention by 6 months of age
Data is collected through a voluntary response DSHPSHWA survey that
is sent to contacts in state and territory EHDI programs each year. The
survey requests data for the previous birth year (i.e., the survey sent
in year 2002 requested data for those infants born in year 2001). The
survey has been expanded since the first version in 1999 to include
additional information about items including legislation, data
reporting, and tracking.
