Rear Admiral William Bailey, DDS, MPH, is Acting Director, Division of Oral Health, in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP). He joined CDC in 2004 as a dental officer, and is an expert on the health effects of fluoride. Dr. Bailey also currently serves as the Chief Dental Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service, where he leads dental professional affairs of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and advises the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health and Human Services on the recruitment, assignment, deployment, retention, and career development of Corps dentists.
RADM Bailey graduated from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1982 and joined the U.S. Public Health Service the same year. He began his career as a dental officer for Denver Hospitals and Clinics. In 1985, he became the Chief Dental Officer for the Federal Correctional Institute in Ray Brook, NY, and in 1998, took an assignment in Guam as the coordinator for a school sealant program that provided care to 18,000 children annually. From 1991 to 1994, he worked in the Aberdeen Area Office of the Indian Health Service as the Area Dental Officer and Director of the Medical Care Evaluation Program.
In 1992, he received his Masters in Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and in 2003, he completed a dental public health residency with the Indian Health Service. Dr. Bailey is a diplomat of the American Board of Dental Public Health. RADM Bailey has received numerous awards from the U.S. Public Health Service. In 2009, he was the recipient of the USPHS Dental Category Jack D.
