2007 National Prevention and Health Promotion Summit

What:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will host the 2007 National Prevention and Health Promotion Summit: Creating a Culture of Wellness.

8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. – Welcome and Opening Presentation: RADM Penelope Slade Royall, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, will open the summit, followed by presentations from Tevi Troy, Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Dr. Julie L. Gerberding, Director of CDC.

12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. – 2007 Innovation in Prevention Awards Luncheon: RADM Steven K. Galson (Acting Surgeon General) will present awards to nine organizations with innovative approaches to help Americans lead healthier lives.

8:45 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. – Keynote speaker Leland Kaiser, Ph.D., futurist and motivational speaker, will speak on the changing American health care system.

9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. – HHS Secretary Michael O. Leavitt will deliver keynote address.

11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. – The 2007 Fries Prize Award for Improving Health will be awarded to Donald R. Hopkins, M.D., M.P.H., Vice President of Health Programs, The Carter Center in Atlanta.

1:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. – During a Town Hall Meeting, panelists representing the non-profit sector, business, state public health and the largest health care insurer in the U.S. will share their perspectives on the costs and benefits of prevention.

10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. – A panel of renowned experts will discuss and debate a hypothetical health promotion scenario, answering the question, "What do we really need to do to promote health?"
