Primaquine Now Available

Updated: 11/2/2012

Primaquine is now available. The antimalarial drug primaquine is no longer on back order, according to its manufacturer Sanofi-aventis. Primaquine is the only drug that can be used to eliminate hypnozoites, the dormant forms of the malaria parasites that occur with Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale infections. Primaquine can also be prescribed for prophylaxis for short-duration travel to areas with principally P.vivax malaria.

For more information about recommended antimalarial drugs by country, see Malaria Endemic Areas by Country. For general information about antimalarial drugs, see Drugs for Prevention.
