Making Health Easier in Communities

Making Health Easier ( is a platform to encourage dialog and participation among CDC-funded initiatives that focus on preventing chronic diseases by promoting healthier behaviors and creating healthier environments in our neighborhoods, schools, homes, and workplaces. Communities, health departments, and national organizations across the US are partnering with CDC to turn the tide on the national epidemic of chronic diseases with efforts to increase the availability of healthy choices, increase physical activity, decrease tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, and promote other important, life-saving changes in our everyday lives. For more information visit Making Health Easier.

Chronic diseases are responsible for 7 of 10 deaths among Americans each year. Treatment for people with chronic conditions accounts for over 75 percent of the more than $2.5 trillion spent on annual U.S. medical care costs. The medical care costs of obesity in the United States total about $147 billion each year, and smoking costs Americans about $96 billion each year in direct medical costs and $97 billion from productivity losses due to premature death. With disease risk often related to economic, social, and physical factors, too many people engage in behaviors such as tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity, and alcohol abuse that lead to poor health and contribute to chronic disease. For more information visit the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
