Optimizing Laboratory Test Utilization for Better Patient Care
Course Title: Optimizing Laboratory Test Utilization for Better Patient Care
Course Duration: 60 minutes
Course Description: Clinical Laboratory Integration into Healthcare Collaborative (CLIHC)TM supported by CDC’s Division of Laboratory Programs, Standards and Services is composed of laboratory specialists and clinicians who are working to optimize the use of laboratory services to improve patient care. CLIHCTM was established to increase awareness, identify major challenges, and to provide evidence to support solutions to addressing the issues associated with inappropriate test selection and incorrect interpretation of test results. CLIHCTM efforts have identified challenges to effective use of laboratory services by clinicians and solutions to improve laboratory test selection and result interpretation. CLIHCTM initiatives to improve laboratory test utilization will be discussed, including medical school and physicians surveys addressing clinicians’ challenges in laboratory test selection and result interpretation.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Define clinicians' challenges to the appropriate use of laboratory testing and result interpretation with a goal of identifying solutions to improve patient care
- Recognize how gaps in medical school curricula can be addressed to improve clinicians’ knowledge of laboratory medicine
