2.2 Injury Classification Scheme

This section allows you to request injury-related cost estimates using one of two distinct injury classification schemes. One of the following schemes must be indicated by clicking on the appropriate radio button:

  • Intent by Mechanism (Cause) of Injury

This option allows you to request cost estimates by intent of injury, mechanism (cause) of injury, or combinations of intent and mechanism of injury. The intent and mechanism of injury categories are based on standard groupings that are used by public health professionals for injury research and injury prevention and surveillance activities. For further details on these categories, see Section 3.1 and Section 3.2.

  • Body Region by Nature of Injury

This option allows you to request cost estimates by body region affected, nature of injury, or combinations of body region and nature of injury. The body region and nature-of-injury categories are defined according to standard groupings used for injury research and injury prevention and surveillance activities. For further details on these categories, see Section 3.3 and Section 3.4.

Note: The available data indicate that there were approximately 181,000 injury-related deaths among U.S. residents during calendar year 2010. All of these injuries are covered under the intent by mechanism classification scheme. However, because of insufficient data about the accompanying diagnoses, 235 of these injuries were excluded from the body region by nature of injury classification scheme.
