CE05-043 - Preventing Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence within Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities

Initial Fiscal Year: 2005
Program: Violence Prevention
FOA Number: CE05-043
FOA Title: Preventing Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence within Racial/Ethnic Minority Communities

Purpose

The purpose of this program announcement is to integrate prevention principles, concepts and practices into racial/ethnic minority community efforts to address sexual and intimate partner violence. This program is intended to assist racial/ethnic minority communities to assess and prevent sexual and intimate partner violence. An emphasis will be placed on working with men and boys in a culturally appropriate manner to prevent these forms of violence before they occur. The outcomes of interest will be building capacity in four key areas: collaboration, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This program addresses the “Healthy People 2010” focus area(s) of Injury and Violence Prevention.

Program Description

To reach racial and ethnic minority communities, two national organizations, the National Indian Justice Center and Migrant Clinicians Network, have initiated efforts within their constituencies to work with men and boys as leaders and agents of change to prevent sexual and intimate partner violence (SV & IPV). Specifically, they will assess risk and protective factors within the minority population; identify models for reaching men and boys; conduct baseline assessments of knowledge and skills; create a leadership consortium comprised of SV/IPV experts, community leaders, public health, and program evaluator; participate in a cross-site evaluation; develop or adapt a culturally appropriate program model to engage men and boys; and deliver, test and evaluate the model.
