Update: Treatment for Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (chancroid, gonorrhea, granuloma inguinale, and lymphogranuloma venereum)

April 17, 2013

This document updates the Technical Instructions for Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (chancroid, gonorrhea, granuloma inguinale, and lymphogranuloma venereum). Updated Technical Instructions for Syphilis, were posted on January 1, 2013. As with the recently released Technical Instructions for Syphilis, the updated Technical Instructions for Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases refer the panel physician to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines for current treatment requirements.

In the past, CDC provided treatment regimens for Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Appendix F of the Technical Instructions for those diseases. With this update, treatment information appears directly on the Technical Instructions webpage, and Appendix F has been removed. Panel physicians should refer to the current Technical Instructions for Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases webpage for guidance regarding treatment and discard any outdated, printed Technical Instructions.

All applicants who need treatment for chancroid, granuloma inguinale, or lymphogranuloma venereum should be treated according to the guidance provided in the current version of CDC’s Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines.

For treatment of gonorrhea, panel physicians should refer to CDC’s updated guidance for gonorrhea treatment, issued in 2012. Treatment of gonorrhea has become complicated by the ability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to develop resistance to antibiotics used for treatment; therefore, panel physicians should follow CDC’s updated treatment guidelines.
