Most of CDC's staff are employed through the Federal Civil Service System. Salary is determined by the position and qualifications. In some instances, special recruitment, relocation, and retention bonuses may be available. Benefits include health and life insurance, vacation and sick leave, a retirement plan, and social security coverage.
Physicians, dentists, engineers, scientists, nurses, pharmacists, or other health professionals may be eligible for the Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Corps. The Commissioned Corps is an all-officer organization that offers a base salary; free medical and dental coverage; malpractice coverage; low-cost life insurance; 30 days paid vacation each year; a non-contributory retirement plan; and travel, housing, and subsistence allowances.
CDC offers special benefits to all employees. They include a broad range of programs: continuing education; lifestyle activities, including exercise, fitness testing, weight management, smoking cessation, cholesterol screening, and other programs; child care center; medical clinic; employee assistance program; credit union; and an employee organization for recreational and community events.
Opportunities are available in Atlanta, Georgia, the headquarters of CDC; the Washington, D. C. area; and in the Agency's field stations located in several states. CDC employees may also be assigned to State and local health agencies, quarantine offices, and other countries.
