Peer volunteers were usually trained in group sessions of 1-3 hours. The following topics were covered in the sessions:

• introduction to the program (goals, target audience for the program, community or area targeted for the intervention)
• basic HIV/AIDS education
• roles and responsibilities of peer volunteers
• identification of target audience for intervention materials
• explanation of the small media materials with role model stories
• distribution of small media materials (including role-playing different scenarios)

Peer volunteers periodically received additional training to enhance their skills in distributing materials. Training was conducted by program staff with the assistance of current program volunteers.
