State of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, HIV Incidence in the United States

MSM by Race/Ethnicity

Total: 28,720

by Transmission Category Black MSM accounted for 35% of new infections Hispanic or Latino MSM accounted for 19% of new infections White MSM accounted for 46% of new infections

This chart shows the racial breakdown among white, black, and Hispanic/Latino MSM newly infected with HIV in 2006.\n\nRemember, this chart represents 53% of all new HIV infections among these groups that occurred in 2006.

These data emphasize that among white, black, and Hispanic MSM, the majority of new infections – 46% - occurred among white MSM. Black MSM accounted for 35% of new infections among MSM, and Hispanic MSM 19%.

These percentages may not tell the whole story. At this time, CDC is working to finalize estimates that would give us specific information regarding the relative impact of HIV infection among different groups of MSM. As we continue to work to get that specific information, the emphasis should be placed on what we do know – MSM of all races are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. But even this isn’t the whole story.

The bar charts below add important information, and also more complexity, to the larger picture of HIV/AIDS. These show that in addition to differences in race, ethnicity, and transmission category, the number of new infections in MSM varies by age within those categories.

For example, among black and Hispanic/Latino MSM, most new HIV infections occurred in the youngest age group – 13 though 29 years.

However, among white MSM, most new infections occurred in men aged 30-39 years old.

These are important distinctions as they provide direction for prevention efforts for different groups.

Among MSM overall, there were more new HIV infections in young black MSM (aged 13-29) than among any other age/racial group of MSM in 2006. The alarming numbers of new infections among young black, Hispanic/Latino, and white MSM underscores the need to ensure that each generation has the knowledge and skills to prevent HIV infection beginning early in their lives. Furthermore, the high incidence of HIV among gay and bisexual men in the middle age groups - ages 30-39 years and 40-49 years – highlights the importance of programs that keep MSM HIV-free throughout the course of their lives.
