Compendium of Evidence-Based HIV Behavioral Interventions

The evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs) listed in the Compendium have been identified by PRS through a series of efficacy reviews and are classified as either best-evidence or good-evidence. These interventions represent the strongest HIV behavioral interventions in the scientific literature to date that have been rigorously evaluated and have demonstrated evidence of efficacy. The Compendium includes individual-, group-, and community-level behavioral interventions for high-risk populations.

The Compendium is now divided into two chapters. A complete listing of each chapter can be accessed below.

Risk Reduction Chapter. Evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs) focusing on sex- or drug-related risk behaviors and proven to either reduce HIV or STD incidence or HIV-related risk behaviors, or increase HIV risk-reduction behaviors.

The Risk Reduction Chapter of the Compendium includes 74 HIV risk reduction (RR) evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs), identified from the scientific literature published or in press through December 2009.

The Risk Reduction (RR) EBIs include:
44 Best-evidence and 30 Good-evidence interventions

68 individual-level and group-level interventions
and 6 community-level interventions

(Updated on August 12, 2011)

NEW! Medication Adherence Chapter. Evidence-based behavioral interventions ((EBIs) focusing on medication adherence behaviors among persons living with HIV and proven to either reduce HIV viral load or improve HIV medication adherence behaviors.

The NEW Medication Adherence Chapter of the Compendium includes 8 HIV medication adherence (MA) evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs), identified from the scientific literature published or in press from January 1996 through December 2009.

The NEW Medication Adherence (MA) EBIs include:
0 Best-evidence and 8 Good-evidence interventions

8 individual- and group-level interventions (ILI/GLIs)
and 0 community-level interventions (CLIs)

(Updated on April 5, 2011)

The PRS project is continuously conducting efficacy reviews to identify new evidence-based behavioral interventions for each chapter. This website will be updated periodically to provide timely information to the prevention field.
