The Nevada Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to

  • Conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
  • Implement effective policies, programs, and practices to avoid, prevent, and reduce sexual risk behaviors among students that contribute to HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and pregnancy.

HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention

Nevada is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that provide parents and families health information to increase parent and family knowledge of HIV, STD, and teen pregnancy prevention.

Activities
  • Develop HIV prevention and sexual health articles for dissemination to parents and families in school newsletters and on district Web sites.
  • Encourage parental support for students to receive sex education instruction offered in local schools during an established course of study.
  • Partner with the Southern Nevada Area Health Education Center to disseminate resources addressing the role of parents in talking with their children about sex education.

Nevada is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in which the lead health education teacher received professional development during the past two years on all of the following:

  • Describing how widespread HIV and other STDs are and the consequences of these infections.
  • Understanding the modes of transmission and effective prevention strategies for HIV and other STDs.
  • Identifying populations of youth who are at high risk of being infected with HIV and other STDs.
  • Implementing health education strategies using prevention messages that are likely to be effective in reaching youth.
Activities
  • Build the capacity of local education agencies to deliver skill-based HIV prevention and sexual health instruction.
  • Offer Web-based opportunities for district health education teachers to increase knowledge and skills in delivering comprehensive sexuality education.
  • Provide follow-up resources and ongoing technical assistance to health education teachers in targeted districts as identified by state and local health data.

Nevada is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that have a policy or policies that address all of the following issues:

  • Attendance of students with HIV infection.
  • Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
  • Conduct a Leadership Symposium for district supervisors and school nurses in collaboration with the State Health Division and the Public Health Foundation.
  • Heighten awareness of HIV policies and compliance practices as identified by School Health Profiles.
  • Establish local plans for periodic review and monitoring of policy content, implementation, and evaluation as it applies to state mandates, regulations, and revised health standards.
