HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention |
Indiana is seeking to increase the percentage of schools
that address all of the following in a required course taught during grades 6, 7, or 8:
- The differences between HIV and AIDS.
- How HIV and other STDs are transmitted.
- How HIV and other STDs are diagnosed and treated.
- Health consequences of HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The benefits of being sexually abstinent.
- How to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- How to access valid and reliable health information, products, and services
related to HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The influences of media, family, and social and cultural norms on sexual behavior.
- Communication and negotiation skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for
HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Goal setting and decision making skills related to eliminating or reducing risk
for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Compassion for persons living with HIV or AIDS.
Activities
- Provide focused professional development and continued technical assistance for
middle school faculty and staff in the areas of HIV/AIDS, standards- and skill-based
instruction, cultural competency, HIV policy development, and the development of
HIV/AIDS-Coordinated School Health Advisory Councils.
- Provide resources and professional development opportunities related to health
education standards, skills-based instruction, and appropriate student assessment to
middle school faculty and staff and community partners across the state.
- Expand the capacity of the HIV cadre to provide effective and timely professional
development for middle school faculty and staff.
Indiana is seeking to increase the percentage of schools in which the lead
health education teacher received professional development during the past 2
years on all of the following:
- Describing how widespread HIV and other STD infections are and the
consequences of these infections.
- Understanding the modes of transmission and effective prevention
strategies for HIV and other STDs.
- Identifying populations of youth who are at high risk of being
infected with HIV and other STDs.
- Implementing health education strategies using prevention messages
that are likely to be effective in reaching youth.
Activities
- Provide focused professional development and continued technical assistance in
the areas of HIV/AIDS 101, standards- and skill-based instruction, cultural
competency, HIV policy development, and the development of HIV/AIDS-Coordinated School
Health Advisory Councils to staff of selected school corporations that serve youth
disproportionately affected by HIV, STD, and unintended pregnancies.
- Provide resources and professional development opportunities related to health education
standards, skills-based instruction, and appropriate student assessment to educators and
community partners across the state.
- Integrate professional development elements of HIV transmission and effective prevention
strategies into the HIV cadre development plan.
- Invite youth-serving organizations to attend professional development events.
Indiana is seeking to increase the percentage of schools that have a
policy or policies that address all of the following issues:
- Attendance of students with HIV infection.
- Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
- Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
- Communicate state and federal policy information to schools and corporations
regarding HIV/AIDS and sexuality education instruction, HIV/AIDS-Coordinated School
Health Advisory Councils, and other HIV-related policy requirements through the
dissemination of an information packet and policy guidance document.
