Healthy KidConnecticut receives funding from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to promote coordinated school health, provide HIV prevention education, and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). Connecticut’s Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) is a collaborative effort between the state’s Department of Education and Department of Public Health. The goals of the CSH and HIV prevention education programs are to strengthen the statewide infrastructure for building partnerships to effectively implement CSHPs and HIV prevention education programs and to increase the effectiveness of policies and practices to promote physical activity, nutrition, tobacco use prevention and HIV prevention among students.

Connecticut's Program In Action

Promoting Coordinated School Health with an Emphasis on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Tobacco Use Prevention (PANT)

  • Partnering with the statewide School Health and Mental Health Advisory Council and an Interagency Workgroup to develop and implement Connecticut’s Coordinated School Health activities.
     
  • Working with the State Board of Education to adopt a new position statement on a Coordinated Approach to School Health and promote it to local school districts.
     
  • Designing and implementing a multi-year Coordinated School Health Leadership Project for local school districts to enhance their capacity to reduce health and education disparities within a Coordinated School Health framework. l-level policies to promote healthy eating and physical activity.
     
  • Developing a multi-year evaluation plan for Connecticut’s Coordinated School Health efforts.

Providing HIV Prevention Education

  • Working with the State Board of Education to adopt a new Position Statement that addresses Comprehensive Sexuality Education and promote it to local school districts.
     
  • Conducting professional development for school district and community-based personnel on research-based prevention programs through the Connecticut Coordinated Cadre of Trainers.
     
  • Providing training and technical assistance to local education agency administrators to enhance the knowledge, skills and leadership capacity needed to integrate HIV/STD and teen pregnancy prevention curricula within their schools.
     
  • Developing a multi-year evaluation plan for Connecticut’s HIV/STD and teen pregnancy prevention efforts.

Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey

  • Partnering with the Department of Public Health to administer the YRBS in high schools throughout Connecticut to obtain data representative of students in grades 9-12.
     
  • Creating a trend data fact sheet on YRBS and School Health Profiles.
     
  • Conducting an awareness campaign to educate school officials and interested parties about the content of and implementation plans for the YRBS.
