HIV, STD, and Unintended Pregnancy Prevention |
Arizona is seeking to increase
the percentage of schools that address all of the following in a required course taught
during grades 9, 10, 11, or 12:
- The relationship among HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The relationship between alcohol and other drug use and risk for HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The benefits of being sexually abstinent.
- How to prevent HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- How to access valid and reliable health information, products, and services
related to HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
- The influences of media, family, and social and cultural norms on sexual behavior.
- Communication and negotiation skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for HIV,
other STDs, and pregnancy.
- Goal setting and decision making skills related to eliminating or reducing risk for
HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
Activities
- Meet quarterly with HIV Material Review Committee to review HIV, STD, sexual health, and pregnancy prevention resources to assist schools in using medically accurate teaching materials that meet state and federal guidelines.
- Administer the 2010 School Health Profiles survey to a random sample of Arizona middle and high schools to assess school-level programs and policies.
- Provide statewide professional development workshops to school staff on policy guidance and characteristics of educational approaches and methods that create effective sexual health and HIV and STD prevention education.
- Provide HIV curriculum trainings using research-based programs and strategies that reduce adolescent HIV infection, STDs, and pregnancy.
Arizona is seeking to increase the
percentage of schools that provide parents and families health information to increase
parent and family knowledge of HIV prevention, STD prevention, and teen pregnancy prevention.
Activities
- Provide opportunities for parents, caregivers, families, and community members to increase their knowledge and develop skills in communicating with youth about HIV, STDs, sexual health, and other sensitive issues.
- Work with schools to provide a facilitated parent meeting addressing parent-child communication about HIV/STD, sexual health and other sensitive issues.
- Provide schools with resources for distribution to families and community members to increase their knowledge of HIV/STD/teen pregnancy and other sexual health issues.
Arizona is seeking to increase the
percentage of schools that have a policy or policies that address all of the
following issues:
- Attendance of students with HIV infection.
- Procedures to protect HIV-infected students and staff from discrimination.
- Maintaining confidentiality of HIV-infected students and staff.
Activities
- Create a new model HIV policy for use by schools in Arizona.
- Develop a HIV communication plan that includes identification of stakeholders, involvement of the HIV Advisory Council, and resource development.
- Disseminate materials that address laws and policies on maintaining confidentiality of children living with HIV and protecting them from discrimination, the implementation of HIV/STD/ sexual health programs in Arizona’s schools, and the use of universal precautions to prevent the transmission of blood borne pathogens.
