PLANNING FOR IMPROVEMENT SLIDES Slide 1: Planning for Improvement (Image of healthy school kids). After completing the self-assessment portion of the SHI, school health teams complete the Planning for Improvement section. Slide 2: Demonstration - School Health Improvement Plan Before we break back into our groups for the Planning for Improvement activity, let’s continue our demonstration from earlier. Turn to the Planning for Improvement section of your notebooks and follow along. Slide 3: Overall Scorecard (Image of sample scorecard). Since we received a 33% on Module 7 in our earlier demonstration, let’s fill in an X in the column marked 21-40%. We will make up some fake scores for the other modules for demonstration purposes. You can either put the exact scores or just an X indicating the range in which your module scores fall. Both methods work fine and will help you see which areas are strong and which areas need more work. Slide 4: School Health Improvement Plan (Image of school health improvement plan). Now we must decide on the actions we want to take. In a real situation, each module group would present its two or three priority actions; or if the entire team completed all the modules together, they would reflect on the priority actions they selected for each of the modules. Then they would decide on several actions to take for the coming school year. It is very important to select a manageable number of recommendations. Most schools choose between 3 and 5 actions. Also consider mixing both short-term and long-term goals. Now let’s select one of our prioritized areas from our demonstration of Module 7 earlier and create a plan for that action. (Encourage audience participation to list and order steps to complete the action, and develop a timeline for the action. Record feedback on flip-chart paper.) (Some common steps are: contact other schools and experts to identify model policies; get student input on ideas; meet with the principal to get support; develop a draft policy; conduct survey/assessment to get feedback from teachers, parents, students, administrators, and community members; develop a slide show about policy for staff, students, parents and the district; and schedule and deliver presentations to staff, students, and parents.) Slide 5: Activity Instructions * Remember roles! * Write your group’s Module 1 score into the Practice Overall Scorecard * Select recommended actions o Select approximately 3-5 actions o REMEMBER to mix short-term and long-term goals! * Complete the action plan for one action (action, steps to completion, person responsible) Now, let’s have you try it. (Refer back to Activity Plan for detailed instructions) Slide 6: Activity Debrief Now, I’d like each group to present its action plan to the rest of us. Tell us which question your action comes from, and list the specific steps needed to implement the action. (After each group presents its action plan) Can anyone tell me if there are any steps missing in this group’s action plan? (After all groups present their action plans) What common steps do you see among the action plans? (Some common steps are: contact other schools and experts to identify model policies; get student input on ideas; meet with the principal to get support; develop a draft policy; conduct survey/assessment to get feedback from teachers, parents, students, administrators, and community members; develop a slide show about policy for staff, students, parents and the district; and schedule and deliver presentations to staff, students, and parents.) Slide 7: Discussion Now, let’s step back from this activity and talk a little about the planning process. * What was easy about this activity? * What was difficult about this activity? * Do you feel that the action plan your group developed is reasonable and feasible? * Do you feel that your group is now well-equipped with a detailed plan to take action in your school? * What was one barrier your group faced, and how did you overcome it? * Now that you’ve had a little bit of experience with this, what advice would you give to a new user of the SHI?
