Talking Points
Active learning strategies encourage student involvement in learning and help them develop concepts, attitudes, and behavioral skills they need to prevent injuries and violence. Proactive classroom management techniques are designed to create calm, orderly classrooms. Techniques include reinforcing positive behaviors, monitoring classroom activity, and promoting cooperative and interactive learning. Students should have repeated opportunities to practice using skills, for example, to resolve conflicts nonviolently. Involve families, community members, and community resources by incorporating injury and violence prevention skills in community-based programs such as service learning projects, and through programs like mentoring that bring adults into schools.
