Talking Points

To help prevent injuries and violence in and away from school, schools can implement health and safety education curricula that help students develop the knowledge, attitudes, behavioral skills, and confidence needed to adopt and maintain safe lifestyles, and to advocate health and safety. To do this, schools can select programs and curricula that are grounded in theory or have scientific evidence of effectiveness. They can also discontinue programs that have no or negative effects. 

National and state health education standards also provide guidance. Curricula should be part of comprehensive health education, be given adequate time in the classroom, be sequential from preschool through high school, and be developmentally and culturally appropriate.
