Talking Points

Schools can use various mechanisms to decrease the likelihood that students will bring weapons onto school property. Having a pleasant environment (for example, one thats free of graffiti) raises expectations for safety. By complying with the federal Gun Free Schools Act, implementing appropriate disciplinary measures, working with families and communities, supervising students, and monitoring the campus, schools can go a long way toward reducing the likelihood of weapons in school. In some schools, environmental security devices such as fencing, limited access to the campus, and metal detectors might be helpful.
