But deaths are just the tip of the iceberg. Each year children aged 5 to 14 make 5.5 million visits to hospital emergency departments for injuries, and 20 million children and adolescents suffer injuries requiring medical attention or restricted activity. This costs the nation 17 billion dollars each year in medical costs alone.
