Management for International Public Health (MIPH) Program
The CDC Sustainable Management Development Program hosted the 2010 Management for International Public Health (MIPH) Program in Gaborone, Botswana from August 18 – September 1. This first regional program, which was designed for mid-level managers and funded in part by PEPFAR, made it easier and more affordable for participants to attend than when it was held in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, it provided an opportunity to showcase the Botswana management capacity building program, which won SMDP’s Management Capacity Building Program Excellence Award in 2008.
This year, the 33 participants who completed the MIPH program were from Botswana, India, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Course topics included team building, effective training, process improvement and conflict management. Participants practiced their training skills in teach-back exercises, with feedback from fellow participants and course facilitators. They drafted goals, objectives and system strengthening activities during the project management course to initiate a management systems strengthening project they will complete over the next year. Participants will be implementing their plans with technical assistance from SMDP staff, where appropriate. Some planned projects include:
- Strengthening the capacity of government public health managers in HIV epidemiology-India
- Evaluating the effectiveness of the SMDP Botswana program and assessing the sustainability of the program-Botswana
- Improving the quality of patient care at NAUTH and Aminu Teaching Hospitals by utilizing the Process Improvement method-Nigeria
In 2011, SMDP will host the 2nd regional MIPH program in Hanoi, Vietnam from November 28-December 9th with an Optional Training-of-Trainers Component December 12th and 13th.

CDC’s 2010 Global Health Leadership Forum
The first CDC Global Health Leadership Forum was held from November 1-5, 2010 with the theme of "Meeting Health Challenges through Leadership and Collaboration." Attending were 42 senior leaders from ministries of health and other national organizations representing 15 different countries: Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.
The Forum participants engaged in thought provoking discussions around systems thinking, collaborative leadership, workforce issues and policy. They participated in several workshops and had the opportunity to network with each other, CDC staff, authors and researchers from around the world. Keynote speakers at the Forum included Peter Senge, senior lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Founding Chair of the Society for Organizational Learning and William Eggers, Global Director for Research and Director of the Deloitte Public Leadership Institute. Dr. Senge facilitated discussions with Forum participants regarding the application of systems thinking approaches to address complex public health issues. In the closing session of the Forum, Mr. Eggers shared his research on policy initiatives and outlined strategies for effectively developing and implementing ideas in public health so that they have the best chance of being successful.
Working in country teams, Forum participants developed an action plan to address a specific health challenge. CDC will provide technical support to the teams to assist with the implementation process over the next year.
