Global Disease Detection Operations Center: Event-Based Surveillance

The GDD Operations Center utilizes event-based surveillance, a system of organized and rapid capture of information about potential disease events that pose a risk to public health. This system of risk assessment is particularly effective in detecting disease occurrences in countries that have weak surveillance and reporting. Since July 2007, over 750 events, and 1,000 updates to these events, have been entered into the system. This historic database allows analysts to track outbreaks over time and rapidly recall outbreak sequence and chronology.
