Global Public Health Informatics Program (GPHIP)

In today’s world where diseases can spread rapidly without respect for borders, public health officials use information and communications science and technology to prepare for and respond to the spread of infectious diseases, emerging health threats, and other public health events.

In 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created the Global Public Health Informatics Program (GPHIP) with the goal of establishing and coordinating CDC’s global health informatics initiatives with international partners. Positioned within CDC’s Center for Global Health in the Division of Public Health Systems and Workforce Development, GPHIP supports CDC’s global mission to improve country response capabilities and strengthen public health systems globally by advancing best practices in informatics science, principles, strategies and standards.

Working collaboratively with ministries of health and other internal and external partners, GPHIP assists countries to develop and apply innovative solutions to public health challenges by developing and implementing standardized information management tools and services. The program also works with partners to create efficient health systems that conform to standards-based data collection, analysis, storage, and reporting methodologies. This approach helps countries improve public health surveillance, epidemiology, laboratory services and disease response capabilities.
