Strengthening Health Systems in Haiti
On January 12, 2010, a major earthquake struck Haiti, killing over 200,000 and injuring over 300,000 people. An estimated 250,000 residences collapsed, displacing an estimated 2 million Haitians. Over 30,000 office buildings collapsed, one of which was the Ministry of Health and Population office. At the invitation of the Haitian government, CDC immediately began working to rebuild and strengthen Haiti's public health systems. Along with U.S. and international partner organizations, CDC's Health Systems Reconstruction Office (HSRO) is helping Haiti to strengthen laboratory capacity, assess environmental health, identify strategies for disease and injury prevention, and establish routine surveillance for health problems.
