Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
CDC Global AIDS Program Zambia office was launched in December 2000. Since then,
CDC has worked with the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) ministries
and provincial health offices to support the national strategy to combat
HIV/AIDS. CDC works in partnership with several other US Government agencies to
conduct this work which has included programs focused on preventing HIV
transmission; treatment and care of those infected with HIV and/or TB;
increasing national laboratory capacity; as well as operational research in HIV
prevention, care and treatment. CDC also partners with international agencies,
universities, and community and faith-based organizations to implement a
comprehensive selection of prevention, care, and treatment services.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Zambia was designated a focus country of the initiative and the CDC Zambia became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
