HIV/AIDS Assets and Strategic Focus

Strategic Focus
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC) and other partners, CDC-Zimbabwe provides technical assistance, funding, and leadership to strengthen evidence-based health systems and services for the prevention, care, and treatment of HIV/AIDS and other health threats in Zimbabwe.

CDC Zimbabwe provides support and technical assistance by:

  1. Supporting service delivery, quality assurance, and evaluation of voluntary male medical circumcision (VMMC), antiretroviral treatment (ART), and prevention of mother-to-child transmission.
  2. Strengthening key health systems, including health management information systems, laboratory services, and human resources for health.

Strengthening Capacity to Deliver ART
CDC helps build the capacity of national systems to provide a high-quality, comprehensive treatment package. This support includes a national HIV training and mentoring program, national HIV care quality assurance activities, improving laboratory quality management and patient monitoring, strengthening health management information systems, and improving national programs for hospital-acquired infection prevention and control.

CDC also supports national monitoring and evaluation efforts, including surveillance for HIV drug resistance and related “early warning” indicators.

Success Stories

Notable Accomplishments

Quality of Care Initiative

  • CDC through HEALTHQUAL is supporting data-driven, facility-level quality improvement activities. The HEALTHQUAL project has reached 83 health facilities in 2014, which will increase to 350 in 2015. Quality improvement strategies have been implemented at all ART sites in Zimbabwe through the coordinated efforts of HEALTHQUAL, the CDC-supported national training and mentoring program, and efforts of other partners, all under the leadership of the MOHCC.

Implementation of VMMC

  • In close collaboration with national and local level MOHCC counterparts, CDC supports VMMC in 21 districts in Zimbabwe. The MOHCC has taken a strong leadership role in the CDC-supported consortium, which is on track to achieve its performance targets for 2014.
