HIV/AIDS Assets and Strategic Focus
Strategic Focus
The CDC South Africa office was launched in June 2000. Since then, CDC has supported the Ministry of Health (MoH) through activities focusing on HIV and tuberculosis (TB) prevention, treatment and care for those infected, and increasing laboratory and health systems capacity.
Strengthening Public Health Systems
CDC provides technical assistance (TA) and funding to the South Africa MoH to strengthen epidemiology, surveillance, laboratory, operations research, and workforce capacity—essential components for strong sustainable public health systems.
Strengthening Laboratory Systems and Networks
CDC builds in-country capacity for high-quality laboratories and national laboratory services, training, infrastructure, and information systems to assist with the rapid expansion of HIV diagnosis and care and treatment.

Notable Accomplishments
CDC South Africa staff members are directly supporting the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) in a assuming leadership for Global Fund activities and monitoring the objectives of the South African National Strategic Plan (SANSP). CDC staff are engaging with SANAC to develop and cost the new SANSP that covers 2011-2015.
In support of National Institute for Communicable Diseases on HIV testing methodologies, CDC implemented programs aimed at measuring the quality of infant diagnostic testing and integrating existing laboratory data collection networks. The Electronic TB Register.net surveillance system is linking into national health information systems.
CDC provides technical assistance, including training and policy development to the National Department of Health (NDOH) to scale up PMTCT programs. Currently, the NDOH has 4,200 PMTCT sites offering provider-initiated testing and counseling and either highly active antiretroviral therapy or dual therapy to HIV-infected patients.
