Beyond Gene Discovery

In 2008, the CDC’s Office of Public Health Genomics and the CDC Foundation launched a new initiative, Beyond Gene Discovery (BGD), in collaboration with public, private, and academic partners. This initiative will assess population genetic variation in the United States in relation to health and disease and develop strategies for using genetic information to impact health and eliminate disparities. The research made possible by BGD will enhance the value of many ongoing gene discovery studies, helping to translate their findings into new targets for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of common diseases.
