Definition of C. gattii cryptococcosis
Cryptococcus gattii (C. gattii) is a type of fungus that is found in the soil and in association with certain trees, particularly eucalyptus trees. C. gattii has been found throughout tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Since 1999, C. gattii has also been found in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, Vancouver Island, and mainland British Columbia. C. gattii infection is considered to be an emerging infectious disease in these areas.
