The National Immunization Program (NIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publishes and distributes periodic bulletins to update partners about recent developments related to the production, distribution, and administration of influenza vaccine. All recipients of this bulletin are encouraged to distribute each issue widely to colleagues, members, and constituents.
Influenza Vaccine Supply and Production
Projection for the 2005-06 Influenza Vaccine Supply
None of the manufacturers have changed projections since publication of Bulletin #2. Total production is estimated to range between 71 and 97 million doses. The lower estimate includes inactivated vaccine produced by manufacturers Sanofi Pasteur, Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline and live attenuated vaccine produced by the manufacturer MedImmune. All 3 of these companies have had lots released for distribution by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Approximately 10 million doses from Sanofi Pasteur, Inc. are late-production doses. The upper estimate includes inactivated vaccine projected to be available from Chiron. However, no lots of Chiron vaccine have been released by FDA to date.Influenza Vaccine Package Inserts

Influenza Vaccine Distribution and Administration
Ordering Influenza Vaccine
- MedImmune still has available quantities of its live attenuated vaccine (FluMist ® ).
- Sanofi Pasteur, Inc. continues to accept orders for its pediatric influenza vaccine in the pre-filled syringe presentation.
- Distributors for the influenza vaccines produced by Chiron and GlaxoSmithKline have been taking orders for those products. Prospective customers should check with these distributors regarding availability.
- Providers may need to explore several potential sources to find influenza vaccine. The Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) offers a listing of many of the distributors that are carrying influenza vaccine this year at www.hida.org/document.asp?document_id=10082.

American Lung Association Influenza Vaccine Clinic Locator
The American Lung Association (ALA), in Partnership with Maxim Health Systems, has developed an electronic influenza vaccine clinic locator. To use the locator, go to www.flucliniclocator.org/, enter a zip code and a date (or dates) and receive information about clinics scheduled in your area. Those interested in listing clinics on the locator can obtain instructions at http://lungusa2.org/embargo/flucliniclocator/.
Influenza Vaccine Added to the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program
See more information on this recent development, including the Federal Register notice and a Question and Answer compilation at www.hrsa.gov/osp/vicp/. To cover the costs of inclusion in the program, a $.75 excise tax is levied on each dose of influenza vaccine sold.
ACIP Recommendations for Preventing Influenza, 2005-06
- The ACIP’s 2005-06 recommendations for preventing influenza were published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) on July 29, 2005 . The entire document can be seen at www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5408a1.htm.
- A statement titled “Tiered Use of Inactivated Influenza Vaccine in the Event of a Vaccine Shortage” was published in the MMWR on August 6, 2005. The article was intended to encourage contingency planning in the event that a tiered approach to influenza vaccination would be necessary during the upcoming influenza vaccination season. To view it, click on www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5430a4.htm.
- Since publication of the August 6 MMWR article, CDC has determined that uncertainties remain about the quantity and timing of this year’s influenza vaccine supply. Thus, prudence dictates that a tiered approach to influenza vaccination as described in the August 6 article be implemented until October 24, 2005. Specifics are described in an MMWR article published September 2, 2005, and available at www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5434a4.htm.
- A self-screening form for patients, which providers and patients may find helpful during implementation of the tiered approach to vaccination, is available on the CDC influenza web site at www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccinescreening.htm.
