Activity: Bidding Adieu to the Seasonal Flu in Homeless Shelters, and transitional living facilities

Description: The project "Bidding Adieu to the Flu" is a health promotion group developed by the outreach nurses to be utilized at homeless shelters, and transitional living facilities. Using the "chain of infection model", these nurses, Joan Jenkins and Sue Johnson, have been conducting flu prevention/health promotion groups. These interactions have better educated the veterans about the "links" in the chain of infection, and how their actions can break them. They receive education on how proper hand washing, the use of cough etiquette, and obtaining the flu shot reduce their risk of becoming infected with influenza. The veterans are then given the opportunity to receive influenza vaccination right there in their temporary living facility.

Description: On September 18, 2014, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) will host its Annual Influenza/Pneumococcal News Conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC at 10:00 am ET.

In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other leading medical and public health groups rallying together to show their strong support for influenza immunization, the event communicates critical messages including a call to action for everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated. Other areas of focus include CDC’s “Take Three” approach to influenza prevention and the importance of pneumococcal vaccination for those indicated.

NFID’s annual news conference creates excitement among the media and the immunization community. Participants may join via webcast at: http://www.visualwebcaster.com/NFID2014-NewsConference. Description: Daily triage process for phone calls from clinic patients with at-risk influenza contact or with new onset flu-like illness during low volume as well as during high volume levels of community contagion.  The triage process integrates initial contact criteria for prophylaxis chemotherapy for at risk contacts, early season office based testing of symptomatic patients for influenza, MD clinic visit vs ER visit decision rules and high volume influenza contagion treatment criteria for triage nurse along with return to work certification criteria. By having a similar basis for low volume as well as for the high volume states of daily triage, the potential for diminished responsiveness during peak epidemic demand levels is diminished.

County health departments declared pertussis outbreaks in Oregon and Washington in 2012. Eighty three percent of people who die from pertussis in the U.S. are less than three months old and often catch it from adult family members.

Activity: Influenza Module Kickoff

Description: On September 18, 2014, Text4baby will launch its new Influenza Module for the 2014-2015 flu season. That day, subscribers to the mobile information service will receive a text message encouraging mothers to get a flu vaccine. They will also be directed to the updated module through which mothers can set up customized reminders. The previous season’s module prompted more than 3,000 flu vaccines, and organizers expect a great outcome again this season.

Text4baby has also partnered with Rite Aid for the second year to offer free flu shots to participating mothers in select states through February 28, 2015. Moms enrolled in Text4baby will receive a text question asking if they want a free flu shot. After replying ?yes,? they will be sent a one-time, non-transferrable code they can use at their nearest Rite Aid store to redeem the free vaccine. Educational and reminder messages will be sent out periodically to encourage current and new Text4baby participants to take advantage of the offer. Rite Aid will be promoting Text4baby and the free flu shot through:

  • Rite Aid’s Text4baby short code ? moms can sign up for the service through Rite Aid by texting RABABY (or RABEBE for Spanish) to 511411.
  • Wellness Ambassadors who will educate women in-store.
  • In-aisle displays with details about Text4baby and the importance of the flu shot.
