Activity: Join Blue Prevent the Flu-Community Outreach

Description: The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) and NFL football team, Indianapolis Colts, have joined forces in effort to raise awareness about preventing the transmission of influenza. Matt Hasselbeck of the Indianapolis Colts has partnered with ISDH as an influenza awareness spokesperson. Check out the videos featuring the Indiana State Health Commissioner, Dr. Jerome Adams and Matt Hasselbeck talking about the influenza prevention gameplan at http://bit.ly/1A2bjH1. Please feel free to send the links to others to increase the influenza awareness.

The ISDH has joined in an innovative partnership to market disease prevention, communications, and health education by using the power of a partnership with the Indianapolis Colt's football organization. The Colts have very powerful communication outreach of over 2.5 million (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Colts Stampede) with a wide viewing and attendance audience that is difficult to reach for adult and teenager influenza vaccinations.

The ISDH and the Indianapolis Colts encourage you to get a flu shot, clean your hands by using soap and water, cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve, contain your illness by staying home when you are ill. During the National Influenza Vaccination Week, the ISDH will have a featured influenza article and a pencil ad with links to videos, flu shot locator and pictures of Matt Hasselbeck with the Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams.

Go to http://bit.ly/11ZSd8y to see the Colts and ISDH signage and game day ad or go to twitter and search #ColtsClean to see pictures of Colts fans washing their hands as part of a twitter contest.

Date/Time: Throughout Flu Season

Activity: Primary Health Care: a comprehensive triage process for influenza.

Description: Daily triage process for phone calls from clinic patients with at-risk influenza contact or with new onset flu-like illness during low volume as well as during high volume levels of community contagion.  The triage process integrates initial contact criteria for prophylaxis chemotherapy for at risk contacts, early season office based testing of symptomatic patients for influenza, MD clinic visit vs ER visit decision rules and high volume influenza contagion treatment criteria for triage nurse along with return to work certification criteria. By having a similar basis for low volume as well as for the high volume states of daily triage, the potential for diminished responsiveness during peak epidemic demand levels is diminished.

Activity: Bidding Adieu to the Seasonal Flu in Homeless Shelters, and transitional living facilities

Description: The project "Bidding Adieu to the Flu" is a health promotion group developed by the outreach nurses to be utilized at homeless shelters, and transitional living facilities. Using the "chain of infection model", these nurses, Joan Jenkins and Sue Johnson, have been conducting flu prevention/health promotion groups. These interactions have better educated the veterans about the "links" in the chain of infection, and how their actions can break them. They receive education on how proper hand washing, the use of cough etiquette, and obtaining the flu shot reduce their risk of becoming infected with influenza. The veterans are then given the opportunity to receive influenza vaccination right there in their temporary living facility.

Description: On September 18, 2014, Text4baby will launch its new Influenza Module for the 2014-2015 flu season. That day, subscribers to the mobile information service will receive a text message encouraging mothers to get a flu vaccine.
