Become a Science Ambassador

Overview

The CDC Science Ambassador Workshop will be held at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, GA, July 16-20, 2012. The 5-day workshop is open to middle and high school STEM* educators.

During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Interact and collaborate in teams with CDC scientists
  • Participate in multiple sessions on selected public health topics led by CDC experts
  • Collaborate with fellow educators and CDC staff to develop model public health lesson plans for use in classrooms and publication on the Science Ambassador website
  • Enhance your professional network of educators and public health officials
  • Tour CDC facilities (including the David J. Sencer CDC Museum)
  • Present draft lesson plans to your colleagues and CDC staff

Educators who complete and meet the expectations of the workshop will earn three (3) Professional Learning Units.

PLEASE NOTE: The Science Ambassador Workshop is limited to a maximum of 16 participants. Submit your documents for consideration early. No registration fee is required; however, selected participants are responsible for travel and accommodation expenses.

*STEM includes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics educators.

Topics

The public health topics covered in the workshop represent significant domestic and global health priorities. Previous health topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • infectious and chronic diseases
  • injury prevention
  • birth defects and disabilities
  • public health technology
  • epidemiology

Lesson Plans

  • Development
    Participants will consult with CDC scientists, learn how to use CDC's resources, and develop science-based lesson plans.

    At the end of the workshop, participants will submit complete lesson plans to the CDC Science Ambassador staff, Career Paths to Public Health Program. CDC Science Ambassador staff ensures that lesson plans meet CDC and National Science Education Standards. Final lesson plans are published on the CDC Science Ambassador website and other education-related web sites.

  • Implementation
    Participants are encouraged to implement the Science Ambassador lesson plans in their classrooms.
