Performance Requirements

To successfully complete the 3-year program, Prevention Specialists are expected to accomplish a core set of public health activities.  These Performance Requirements demonstrate the diverse skill sets necessary for managing public health prevention programs.  

  1. Evaluate a program component or intervention strategy and prepare a summary.

  2. Make presentations to professional and lay groups using a variety of presentation media.

  3. Prepare written response to a policy-related issue (e.g., briefing document, Congressional Q&A) that includes scientific, economic, and ethical points.

  4. Make an oral presentation to a lay audience giving expected health outcomes that may be politically or emotionally charged.

  5. Write a plan for a health program.

  6. Develop a staffing plan and budget supported by written justifications for a public health initiative.

  7. Draft a consensus document from a planning meeting with goals and organizational responsibilities.

  8. Develop and implement an intervention that involves collaboration with non-traditional public health providers and/or involvement with the at-risk community.

  9. Analyze various aspects of a data system (i.e., surveillance, registries, or information systems) and recommend appropriate actions (e.g., improving reporting delays or targeting limited resources).

  10. Develop a health needs assessment that provides data on the factors contributing to health or identifies health service gaps (e.g.,  community survey, emergency department records review).

  11. Communicate effective and timely health-risk information to the public (e.g., public service announcement, consumer fact sheets, newsletter, or journal article).
