Topic 1 — Introduction to Informatics
 
    A. Introduction to Informatics using Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    This module will take a high level look at Informatics and how Epi Info™ can assist Epidemiologists with data analysis. During this course we will explore the benefits of Epi Info™, as well as take a look at best practices for capturing and analyzing data.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Identify best practices for analyzing data
    • Explain the how data can be collected and analyzed
    • Demonstrate the ability to determine the appropriate data to be collected for a given scenario
    • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the navigation of Epi Info™.
 
    B. Understanding Relational Databases using Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    In this module you will be introduced to the basics of relational databases and see how proper database management can assist with data analysis.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Recognize the key aspects of relational databases and how they impact Epi Info™
    • Explain how relational databases make your data easy to manage and analyze.
 
Topic 2 — Collecting Data
 
     A. Creating Survey Forms with Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    This module will teach you the best practices of creating survey forms with Epi Info™. This module will show you how to create fields, create pages, and customize surveys.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Demonstrate the ability to successfully create a survey in Epi Info™ using a pre-defined set of fields and requirements
    • Properly match a field to the correct field type
    • Identify the steps to create a new page
    • Identify the steps to set the tab order for a series of fields
    • Explain the difference between parent and child views
    B. Validating Data
  • Module Description:
    This course will show you how to add control and data validation to your survey.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Demonstrate the ability to calculate data
    • Identify the steps required to validate data
    • Explain the benefits of data validation.
     C. Entering Data Using the Survey Forms
  • Module Description:
    This course will teach you how to enter data into surveys created with Epi Info™. You will also learn how to find and delete records.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Demonstrate the ability to enter a pre-determined set of data into an existing Epi Info™ survey
    • Explain how to activate data validation
    • Demonstrate the ability to find a record
    • Demonstrate the ability to delete a record.
 

Topic 3 — Analyzing Data

 
     A. Managing Data in Analysis
  • Module Description:
    This course will introduce you to data analysis using Epi Info™. This course will show you how to list, sort and display data.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Identify the steps required to open a project to analyze
    • Explain the Program Editor
    • Demonstrate the ability to display a pre-defined list
    • Identify the steps required to sort data
    • Demonstrate the ability to display specific records.
    B. Creating Programs in Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    This course will show you how to create and open programs in Epi Info™.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Identify the steps required to save a program in Epi Info™
    • Open an existing program.
     C. Basic Data Analysis using Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    This course will teach you how to merge data, create a frequency distribution, determine the mean, create tables, write new variables and assign values to variables.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Evaluate a scenario and determine which analysis tool should be used to analyze the data
    • Identify the steps required to merge two sources of data
    • Determine the number of records for a specific variable
    • Explain how to obtain the mean of a set of data
    • Create a table showing the relationship between two variables
    • Demonstrate the ability to create a new variable in a data table
    • Identify the steps required to properly assign a value to variable.
 

Topic 4 — Visualizing Data

 
     A. Creating Graphs with Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    This module will show you how to create graphs to represent your data using Epi Info™.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Evaluate a scenario and determine which graph type should be used to display the data
    • Create 3 different graphs.
    B. Introduction to the Geographic Information System (GIS) methods using Epi Info™ and Epi Map
  • Module Description:
    This module will introduce you to GIS and show you how to use your data to create a map in Epi Info™.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Create a map using a pre-defined set of criteria
    • Demonstrate the ability to customize a map
    • Demonstrate the ability to change the properties of a map
    • Explain the basics of GIS.

Topic 5 — Reporting Data

 
     A. Generating Reports in Epi Info™
  • Module Description:
    This module will teach you how to generate reports in Epi Info™ with your data. This course will teach you how to add objects to your report, as well as customize the object properties.
  • Module Objectives:
    • Identify types of data that can be displayed on a report.
    • Demonstrate the ability to add objects to a report
    • Identify the steps required to change the properties of report objects.
