Online availability of compatibility information for skin antiseptics and antimicrobial ointments with chronic hemodialysis catheters

CDC recommends the use of alcohol-based chlorhexidine (>0.5%) solution as the first line skin antiseptic for catheter exit site care. Povidone-iodine (preferably with alcohol) or 70% alcohol are acceptable alternatives for patients with chlorhexidine intolerance. CDC also recommends the application of povidone-iodine ointment or bacitracin/gramicidin/polymyxin B ointment during catheter dressing change. Triple antibiotic ointment (bacitracin/neomycin/polymyxin B) might be an acceptable alternative.

This chart provides links to information available from catheter manufacturers on compatibility of topical antiseptics and antimicrobial ointments with various chronic hemodialysis catheter models. The catheter models included in this chart were limited to those identified using the Food and Drug Administration Medical Devices Establishment Registration Database and manufacturer websites.

NOTE TO MANUFACTURERS: If new information is available, please contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention via e-mail.
