Hospital Discharge Rates for a Lower Extremity Condition as First-Listed Diagnosis per 1,000 Diabetic Population, by Age, United States, 1980-2003
From 1980 through 2003, hospital discharge rates for a lower extremity condition as the first-listed diagnosis per 1,000 diabetic population increased with increasing age. In 2003, the discharge rate for a lower extremity condition as first-listed diagnosis among people aged 75 years or older was 1.6 times that of people aged 44 or younger (26.3 vs. 16.3 per 1,000 diabetic population). From 1996 to 2003, age-specific discharge rates per 1,000 diabetic population decreased, with the exception of people aged 0-44 years, for whom rates showed little change until year 2000 when it increased slightly thereafter.
