Number (in Thousands) of Hospital Discharges with a Lower Extremity Condition (LED) as First-Listed or Secondary Diagnosis and Diabetes as Any Listed Diagnosis, United States, 1980-2003
Among hospital discharges with diabetes as any-listed diagnosis (first-listed or one of the six secondary diagnoses), the number of discharges with a lower extremity condition (i.e., peripheral arterial disease, ulcer/inflammation/infection, or neuropathy) as a first-listed diagnosis and as a secondary diagnosis more than doubled from 1980 through 2003. During this time period, the number of discharges with a lower extremity condition as the secondary-listed diagnosis increased more rapidly than discharges with a lower extremity condition as the first-listed diagnosis. In 2003, there were 873,000 discharges with a lower extremity condition as either the first-listed or secondary diagnosis. In about 30% of these discharges, it was the first-listed diagnosis.
