Hospital Discharge Rates for Diabetic Ketoacidosis as First-Listed Diagnosis per 1,000 Diabetic Population, by Age, United States 1980-2003
Rates of hospital discharge for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) as the first-listed diagnosis were lower in 2003 than in 1980 for each age group examined. Age-specific rates were highest among people aged less than 45 years and were much lower for those age 45+. In 2003, the DKA hospital discharge rate for people aged less than 45 years was 39.7 per 1,000 people with diabetes, which is over 20 times the rate of people aged 65 and older (1.1 per 1,000). Among people aged less than 45 years, DKA discharge rates began to increase in 2001. Additional years of data are needed to confirm this trend.
