Crude and Age-Adjusted Hospital Discharge Rates for Heart Failure as First-Listed Diagnosis per 1,000 Diabetic Population, United States, 1980–2003

Crude and age-adjusted hospital discharge rates for heart failure as first-listed diagnosis per 1,000 diabetic population increased between 1980 and 1993 and then dropped in 1994. From 1994 through 2003, the age-adjusted rate leveled off while crude rate declined. The age-adjusted rate in 2003 (18.5 per 1,000 diabetic population) was 161% higher than the rate in 1980 (7.1 per 1,000 diabetic population).
